"Was that wise?" asked Nava.
"No, as now he has a taste for me. But at least he didn't try to take it further. And what else could I have done?"
"Left the junkie to his misery? He does this all the time."
"I know. He gets caught up in his work, thinks he can handle the withdrawal, then snaps out of it to find he can hardly move. But he always catches himself before it's too late. Guess Charles locking him in was bad timing."
"He can go years, even centuries, without feeding if he wants to."
"Yes, I know, but he doesn't want to. It's a life sentence of misery either way, but not many vamps can withstand the initial withdrawal, let alone the cravings that never go away."
"So he just goes out and kills every week or two so he can feel good? That's not right."
"It's not what we would do, but then, I guess it is. You hunt. So do I. We think nothing of it. That's how Arch sees it."
"No, it isn't the same. Otherwise, he wouldn't crave it so bad, and try to stop getting his fix every few years and cause untold trouble for Charles. It's a joke."
"It's no laughing matter either way. Can you imagine being that addicted to something? But be honest, is what he does so different to what we do? We kill when we get a job, and we kill for meat to eat. You enjoy the hunt. You rip little animals apart with your teeth. Some would call that gross and unnecessary."
"And I could survive without it. I know the argument about it being the nature we all have, but his is different. He kills people, and that's wrong. Wrong when they aren't crazed monsters. You assassinate evil people. There's a difference."
"He doesn't slay nice people. He executes those Charles tells him are open targets."
"Another pet. Another trophy for Charles," grumbled Nava.
"Do you mean that? Is that how you see him? Am I one of his pets?"
"No, I didn't mean it. Sorry, I'm just worried about him. But I hate sneaking around and dealing with Arch. It isn't natural, that's what I'm getting at. He's a hunter, but an unnatural one. And he does not kill to make the world a better place. He does it because he can't help himself, and he does it so he can feel better than everyone else."
"And is feeling good so wrong? Think of what he's achieved over the years. This library, all the knowledge he has, how much he's helped others. Helped Charles. That's got to be worth something."
"It is," sighed Nava, then wandered over to a Chesterfield sofa and sniffed the cushion. "Smells strange. Someone's been here recently. Maybe today."
"That's weird. You sure?" Nava frowned at me, ears drooping. "Sorry, of course you are."
We waited, nothing but the hum of the hidden electronics and the air exchange units to break the silence.
Nava was right about Arch, yet wrong too. He was an abomination,
